Shazam! Review - Absolutely Spoiler Free

shazam movie poster

Whether you’re a kid who loves superheroes, a long-time Shazam (or as he was apparently originally known in the comics, Captain Marvel) fan, or just a tired adult like me who wants something light-hearted and fun to entertain you for two hours, this movie truly delivers.

Shazam! is pretty solid all around. It has a good premise, lovable characters, a good cast, a predictable yet undoubtedly fulfilling plot, one or two touching tear-jerker moments, loads of laughs and LOTS of heart. It has a bunch of tropes I personally adore, though I can’t elaborate any of them without risking spoilers. What I can say is all these tropes are executed very well.

movie still and movie ticket

Zachary Levi as Shazam and Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana are brilliant in this movie. Asher Angel as Billy Batson is plenty charming as well. I have to say though, Jack Dylan Grazer is the one that really stood out to me as Freddy Freeman, Billy Batson’s witty, disabled, superhero fanboy of a stepbrother who plays a huge role in Billy’s character arc. Both the actor and the character are amazing. That isn’t to say he’s the only talented child actor in this. All the children are adorable and badass! Getting to know them throughout the film is a joy.

This is a wholesome feel-good movie you can see with family and friends (or even alone, like I did) without having to know anything about the character or lore beforehand. So go give it a watch if you haven’t yet. There are two after-credits scenes by the way so make sure not to miss them!

Shazam! gets a complete score from me!

Dudi

I like movies with a reasonable amount of cheese and there's always a special place in my heart for bizarre films.
