5 Websites for Bored Minds

You know those days when you feel bored, even when there are dishes to wash and homework to do and clothes to fold? Yeah, we've all had those days. But I'm not here to give you a motivational speech on goal setting and accomplishments, because sometimes we just need to numb our brains and do mindless things. Luckily, the world wide web is indeed wide and I'm here to give you several sites where you can park yourself and waste your time.

I'm serious -- if you have a deadline coming up, close this tab immediately; the following websites are guaranteed to suck away your time.

A Dark Room

A simplistic text-based interface belies this deceptively intricate game. The game starts in, as the title says, a dark room, where you keep a fire going, meet a stranger, and attempt to build a community. As you go farther along, more tasks open up, and you uncover a story that's more complicated than the initial premise of surviving in the wild. Seriously, all you do is click away, but it's hard not to get invested in the community that you've created.

Mapcrunch

International flights are taking a bit of a backseat this time of COVID, and Mapcrunch offers the next best thing (sort of). It drops you in the middle of a random location anywhere in the world through Google Maps, which you're free to explore. It's a lot of fun seeing how cities around the world look! Make it complicated: see if you can get to the airport without checking Google.

Incredibox

I don't know about you, but I've always wanted to feel like a DJ -- disregard my lack of music production skills. Good thing someone invented Incredibox, a site where you can mix music to your heart's content. Just load one of their preset tracks, and click away. The quirky illustrations jive along to your creation, which adds to the experience. Time to put on your best DJ gear and pretend like you're in a rave (even if you're just in your room!).

Listverse

What is it about lists that make them so addictive to read? For me, it's the novelty of breaking down a large chunk of information into ten or so items, which is why I used to waste a lot of time on Listverse. The site is full of, you guessed it, lists discussing various topics such as politics, creepy facts, true crime, entertainment, etc. Once you've finished a list, there's always a link to more lists at the bottom, which means you'll be here the whole day. You're guaranteed to learn something new every day through this site!

Lifehacker

A lot of us are still struggling with "adulting". Don't you just wish there was a manual for transitioning to adulthood? Lifehacker solves that, in a sense. From upping your culinary skills to summarizing current events, it's easy to find an article that would tickle your fancy. To be honest, I've read a lot of articles here even though I don't plan on using the information anytime soon. But hey, you never know when your non-existent car is going to break down, so might as well store the repair information in your brain.

And that's it! If your boredom still isn't sated with this list, then I suggest you visit The Useless Web (http://www.theuselessweb.com) which generates a random useless website for you to enjoy. When I say useless, I mean USELESS. A sample site is a game where you can slap a guy with an eel. But hey, we're not here to be productive, right?
